Island Report: Update on Island grocery store

An Island couple set out to build one, but years after they began they are still trying to get the permits to build it.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — One thing that residents of Padre Island have wanted for decades is a grocery store.

An Island couple set out to build one, but years after they began they are still trying to get the permits to build it.

The location is a wetland, state right of way with no drainage, no underground infrastructure — all of the hurdles that come with development on the Island.

So far the developers are about $2 million out of pocket, but contrary to popular belief the city hasn't been the big problem.

The City Council knows the process needs attention.

After four years it looks like construction could begin in about three months. Then it will be time to cut the weeds and start building.
