Keep Her Wild rally in Port Aransas

The protest was to raise awareness about industrialization in the Coastal Bend

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Environmentalist say cities like Port Aransas have seen an uptick in industry.

“It's upwards of 15 separate projects that are under either planning, permitting, or scheming as we speak,” John Morris, member of Port Aransas Conservancy said.

Morris said he's not anti-industry, but said these projects are being rushed and the environmental impacts are being thrown to the wayside. He said people are just concerned about taking advantage of the oil.

“As prices are already starting to get wonky, as demand is starting to get wonky everyone is trying to get a piece of the pie,” Morris said.

And he said they aren't considering what's at risk.

“There is over 600 species of wildlife that come in and out of here, and this is their nursery like dropping your kids off at daycare,” Cara Denney, Keep Her Wild spokesperson.

So they said if the industries aren't careful it could ruin an entire habitat of marine life.

“Dredging alone can cause all this sediment to be suspended which will choke out seagrasses and that chokes out your nursery and stuff leaves and once its's gone it's gone,” Billy Ellis, activist said.

Activists said the coastal bend is one of the few places along the Texas coast that hasn't been covered by smog and industry and they want to keep it that way.
