Local veterans prepare for Armistice Day ceremony

They will be honoring local men and women who fought during the war

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) — On November 11th, 2018 at 11 A.M., bells will ring at the Seaside Cemetery in honor of Armistice Day.

The bell will ring for each of the Coastal Bend Veterans who have passed away since fighting during World War I. The ceremony will take place on the 100th anniversary of the war ending.

"Veterans need to be recognized. They need to receive their due and benefits that are earned and that's one of the reasons we're doing it," said Benny Martinez, a member of the Patriots Band and Honor Guard.

Martinez and his colleague Jesse Garcia, have organized the event together. They've invited the friends and family of loved ones who fought during World War I to the memorial ceremony. Martinez believes there are 40 World War I veterans who lived in the Coastal Bend.

"We have received feedback from several folks, families in the area that we had no idea that there descendants of those folks.that were involved in World War I," Martinez added.

Benny and Jesse said they are thankful for Seaside Cemetery for hosting the ceremony. They have also enlisted the help of local Boy Scout Troops for help and Senator Chuy Hinojosa will be the main speaker.

The men invited anyone to attend the ceremony but advise visitors to arrive well in advance to find parking and make their way to the memorial.

Seaside Cemetery is located at 4357 Ocean Drive.
