Low-carb bakery responds to burglary by giving out free cake cups

If you haven't had a chance to try out Phat Keto, they are open every Tuesday through Saturday.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Some burglars broke into a bakery specializing in low-carb treats early Friday morning in downtown Corpus Christi and helped themselves to a variety of food and equipment. However, rather than closing up shop for the day and regrouping, the owner chose to give away hundreds of desserts for free.

When Margie Castillo found out her bakery, Phat Keto, was broken into, it didn't break her spirit. Instead, it made her want to spread more love doing what she does best -- baking.

Castillo first found out about the burglary when she was woken up by a call from her alarm company at 3 a.m. Friday.

"They were checking to see if everything was okay because my back door was open at the shop," Castillo said. "'Well,' I said, 'It's not okay. I'm not there.'"

When she arrived to the bakery her TV, cash box, and some equipment and merchandise were gone.

"I just feel violated because I'm just trying to work and do a good thing here," Castillo said.

She called her food manager Liz Martinez to give her the news, and Martinez told her not to be discouraged.

"I said, 'You can't just close down and not do anything. You have to come back. We have to keep going,'" Martinez said.

Castillo agreed and got an idea to go one step further after seeing a cake cup left behind by the thieves.

"I look at it and I'm like, 'Okay, we're going to make the cake cups a little bit bigger today,'" Castillo said. "So that's what we're doing."

And not just bigger -- Castillo made them free.

That was the cherry on top for customer Ryan Moore and his wife Jessica who stopped by to celebrate her birthday low-carb style.

"We want to make sure we are supporting them on their day, so we're getting the free cake cup and picking up a couple of other items for her birthday," Moore said.
