Men flashing badge raise suspicions in Robstown area

Rosie Torres and her husband said they were caught off guard when they got a video alert on their phone that someone was at their front door.

ROBSTOWN, Texas — A group of men going to homes in the Robstown area and flashing a badge has some residents on high alert.

The men were caught on surveillance video at least two separate homes. It happened when the homeowners weren't there, and during broad daylight.

Now the Nueces County Sheriff's Office is investigating who the men actually were. Homeowners said the footage showed a man holding what appeared to be a law enforcement badge.

Rosie Torres and her husband said they were caught off guard when they got a video alert on their phone that someone was at their front door.

"Also they did not identify themselves or say anything, just holding that badge sideways," Torres said.

The couple taking a closer look at their video feed which revealed something else.

"What really triggered us, when we looked at the surveillance, they had been casing the area since 2 p.m. They were back and forth down the street with a lookout vehicle," Torres said. "There were two vehicles. One was a Chevy Tahoe, the other was a newer Chevy Tahoe, both black."

This all took place at the Torres' residence off County Road 77, south of Robstown, Texas. It turned out the men were also spotted on camera at a neighbor's home. The men eventually left, but it sparked enough concern for Torres to notify authorities.

"Immediately they knew, made contact with other agencies," Torres said. "Definitely not any of their guys."

Torres said someone in the neighborhood also had a run-in with the group and questioned their intentions.

"She asked them what they were wanting and their excuse is that there had been a rise in criminal activity in the area and they wanted access to our security footage," Torres said.

So who were they? Nueces County Sheriff J.C. Hooper said they are working to find out, adding that most of the time burglars will avoid cameras at all cost.
