Metro Ministries preparing the homeless for the cold weather

The organization also helps provide a warm meal through their Loaves and Fishes cafeteria.

Corpus Christi (KIII News) — The homeless will be hunkering down ahead of freezing temperatures expected in the Coastal Bend Tuesday.

In the meantime, the non-profit Metro Ministries is doing what it can to make sure those who call the streets home stay warm.

John told 3News he has lived on the streets for the last 15 years. He said he knows the cold.

"It's very miserable. Have to sleep on the ground. We can only cover up what we have to stay warm," John said.

Metro Ministries CEO Patty Clark showed 3News their coat room, where all of the items that have been donated to the organization go before being distributed to area homeless families. She said they are always in need of everything from jackets to scarves, even beanies and gloves.

Right now they are fully stocked, but Clark said she knows once the temperatures really plunge down to freezing, their supplies won't last.

"When you are moving from your house to your car, you might need a light sweater for a minute, but for those who live outdoors, they might need much heavier gear," Clark said. "So we make sure we have all levels of coats for those who live outside."

Metro Ministries serves the area homeless in a variety of ways. Their Rainbow House dorm is always a full house on any given day with 39 women and 14 children enrolled in their program. The organization also helps provide a warm meal through their Loaves and Fishes cafeteria.

Clark said while they are not an overnight shelter, even if someone isn't enrolled in their program on a night like the ones were able to experience, they won't turn anyone away.
