More than 100,000 expected at 2019 Wings Over South Texas Air Show

Organizers have been meeting for months to get ready for the air show.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Upwards of 100,000 people are expected for this year's Wings Over South Texas Air Show at Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi.

It's coming up on the weekend of April 13-14.

The base commander explained Wednesday what they are doing to get ready for the big event. Organizers have been meeting for months to get ready for the air show.

"I remember as a youngster my grandfather gave me photos of Navy birds and my dad dragged me willingly, to many air shows and I just fell in love with it," Capt. Phillip Brock said.

Brock said it is exciting for him to be hosting this year's Wings Over South Texas Air Show. He said the crowds will have plenty to see and do and this year as they are adding about 25 food trucks.

But the show will be in the sky over Corpus Christi Bay by both U.S. Navy pilots and civilian flyers. The highlight will be the U.S. Navy's flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels.

"They all seem to be a little bit different and I'm in awe watching them do what they do," Brock said. "Even as a pilot I don't know if I'd want to put my plane in the situation they do. But they're great. They're true professionals but I got to tell you the Blues is my favorite part."

The show will be centered over the water on the north side of the base.

Through a partnership with Veteran's Memorial High School, the Navy is holding "Meet the Blues" on Friday, April 12.

"It's a great chance to come in, take photos, shake hands, say hello and just have a good time with the Blue Angels," Brock said.

Gates at the base will open at 8:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday and the show itself begins at noon. You can bring the whole family and your lawn chairs and you'll be able to enjoy two days of stunt flying and the Blue Angels at NAS-Corpus Christi.
