Navy announces new combat ship to be named USS Kingsville

The future USS Kingsville, an Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship, or LCS , will be built by Austal USA in Mobile, Ala.

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Mayor Sam Fugate announced Thursday that one of the U.S. Navy's upcoming combat ships will be named the USS Kingsville in honor of the South Texas city.

The future USS Kingsville, an Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship, or LCS , will be built by Austal USA in Mobile, Ala. The highly maneuverable and lethal ship will be be capable of operating at speeds in excess of 40 knots and is designed to support focused mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare missions.

News of the naming of the USS Kingsville was announced Thursday by Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer. Mayor Fugate stated in a news release Thursday that it's an honor for the city to be recognized.

"The City of Kingsville, including its residents, has always had a positive and supportive relationship with the Navy," Fugate said. "This recognition symbolizes how hard we have worked to strengthen that relationship and how much work is needed to continue to support existing and future military missions in Kingsville."
