19-year-old Colton Cavazos was fatally shot at Mirabella Apartment Homes in 2016 and Tuesday marks a solemn anniversary for the Coastal Bend.
"I can't call him and say hey where are you at? Hey, what are you doing? We hung out every day, and it's just hard, it's hard," Cavazos' best friend Karisa Burris said.
"I grieve the loss of never being, you know seeing him get married, having a family of his own," Cavazos' mother Sally Rowsey said.
It has been a year since Rowsey held her only child in her arms.
"My last text message to him was telling him how much I loved him and knowing his response was I love you more," Rowsey said.
Family and friends gathered to remember Cavazos whose life was cut short too soon on November 14, 2016. Cavazos was found shot in the chest in the parking lot of the Mirabella Apartment Homes, and he later died at the hospital
"How everything happened, it didn't seem real, it didn't make sense," Cavazos' friend Kayla Chapa said.
Currently, no one is behind bars for the crime and police believe the shooter left with a group of people,
"We would like some closure to this knowing that there were so many people out there that witnessed it and saw who the shooters were," Rowsey said.
Rowsey begs those who know anything about Cavazos murder to visit the police.
"Because god forbid that this happened to them. There brother their sister. Having their mom go through what me and my family are going through," Rowsey said.
The burden of not knowing who killed her son and why will always remain with Rowsey.
