This year's Coastal Bend Day of Giving supports 50 area nonprofits on the forefront of assisting those in need, and Timon's Ministries is one of them.
From Timon's Ministries:
"A Hand Up, not a Hand Out is the mantra of Timon's Ministries, a day resource center located in the Flour Bluff community of Corpus Christi, TX. Timon's was incorporated in 1999 after a group of churches collaborated to serve the growing sandwich ministry, primarily serving the homeless in the area. Since that time, the landscape of the area has changed, with building and occupying the vacant land that was the campground for many.
Today, Timon's serves hot meals averaging between 80-100 guests Monday-Friday. In addition the Crisis Pantry distributes between 2-3 tons of groceries into the local community. Laundry and showers are popular and a free clothing closet is stocked by the community and staffed with volunteers. It is important to note that Timon's clients are predominately the working poor. Less than 15% are actually the chronic homeless.
Initially primarily a feeding station, Timon's has evolved into a day resource center with a complement of health services serving not just the local community but all low/no income, non insured individuals. We ask that the patient be drug free if we are providing any dental, eye care or medicines.
The William Allen Dental Clinic opened in 2009. A grant from the Howell Foundation secured the infrastructure. Volunteer dentists have treated over 3400 patients from throughout the Coastal Bend. Patients who have their teeth removed at this facility are fitted with proper dentures. In 2011 Timon's began monthly eye care providing new frames and appropriate lenses free of charge.
Family medicine was integrated into the health arm of the ministry in 2012. Providing care 3 days per week, the MD has over 2500 patient charts all within the parameters of who we serve. Timon's has a nurse on board 5 days weekly. This population often has unresolved health issues that preclude dental care. If non insured, the in house MD can become their primary provider.
One third of the clients are either pre diabetic or have the disease. A grant from Methodist Healthcare Ministries funds all of the health initiatives, including medicines, medical supplies, eye wear and dental. All registrants of the Crisis Pantry are asked to test for diabetes. A1C results are tracked and better food choices are provided. In 2018, Timon's has added inoculations for flu and pneumonia. Other financial assistance for IDs, birth certificates and licensing is provided to drug free individuals.
Timon's is a 501 c3 tax exempt charity funded by grants, churches, individuals and fundraisers."
