Someone to Know: Eagle Scout Spencer Carruth

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) — Students affected by Hurricane Harvey are finding some relief in Rockport thanks to an Eagle Scout.

Spencer Carruth is graduating from Rockport Fulton High School and even though he will not be in the Coastal Bend next fall, his legacy will be lasting with the creation of the "Caring Closet."

"Hurricane Harvey happened, of course. And then the need here only increased. But there was not enough support structure here at the high school to offer those kids in need what service they required," Carruth said.

After Harvey, Carruth saw the demand from students for much-needed school supplies, toiletries, and food.

"I've been in scouting program since 3rd grade, starting in Cub Scouts," Carruth said.

The Caring Closet was born, and the timing was appropriate because he was a scout tasked with an end-of-the-year project.

"The really cool aspect of this project is that it is designed to be ongoing and be supported by various student groups," Carruth said.

While most seniors suffer from "senioritis," Carruth sees the positive effect of giving back to his school.

"It kind of falls on you with a sense of warmth that you get by being compassionate to others," Carruth said.

Carruth will move out of town soon enough and given recent events and recovery post-Harvey, he could consider a career in politics.

"I plan on going to Texas Tech despite what my shirt may say. I plan on majoring in political science," Carruth said.
