Someone to Know: High School Teacher of the Year Gilberto Gonzalez

Gonzalez wanted to make a difference in his community after serving in the military, and he found his calling as an English teacher.

ROBSTOWN, Texas — A teacher in Robstown is making waves for his skills in the classroom.

Recently Gilberto Gonzalez was recognized as High School Teacher of the Year for the Robstown Independent School District.

According to Gonzalez, teaching is all about showing respect and helping the students believe in themselves.

"All right, let's go let's do this day," Gonzalez said. 

Positivity in the hallways of Robstown high school is contagious for Gonzalez.

"I am an alum of Robstown High School, and this is me right here 1971 number 73," Gonzalez said. 

Gonzalez wanted to make a difference in his community after serving in the military, and he found his calling as an English teacher.

"One of the things we practice in the military we are a family and work together, and things get accomplished much quicker if we work with each other and trust each other," Gonzalez said. 

According to Gonzalez, he makes it a point to treat each student with respect and to let them know he's there for them.

Gonzalez' students couldn't be more proud of his accomplishment.

'"Mr. Gonzalez is a phenomenal teacher has taught me a lot of great things this year he's one of my favorite teachers and has taught me to think on my feet," sophomore Isaac Lemus said. 

"He's just different from all the other teachers he shows enthusiasm, and he interacts with the kids. not only a veteran but serves here at school," sophomore Savanna Flores said. 

Honored and humbled by the recognition, Gonzalez goal is to make a difference in the lives of his students.

"Indeed any one of these teachers could be in my place right now, very proud to represent Robstown," Gonzalez said.
