Students attend GEMS Conference at Moody High School

The GEMS conference is aimed at showing young women the potential to enter these fields when they finish high school.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Over 350 female students from the Coastal Bend gathered at Moody High School for a GEMS Conference.

The GEMS program encourages young women to enter into STEM fields and is known as Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science.

The GEMS conference is aimed at showing young women the potential to enter these fields when they finish high school.

Presenters gave the women a firsthand look at what the GEMS fields are like.

"When a female STEM professor is presenting to them, and they say this girl or this lady can do it then that means I can do it," Presenters Gloria Bileye-Benido said.

According to Bileye-Benido, there is a severe lack of women in these fields.

Bileye-Benido encourages female students to look into studying gems in college.
