How to help graduating seniors in the Coastal Bend

Communities in Schools, an organization, said many teens cannot afford a cap and gown

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — An organization said there are dozens of teens in the Coastal Bend who are at-risk of not walking across the stage for graduation, but it's not due to grades.

Some students cannot afford a cap and gown.

While some schools are able to hold fundraisers to help these students, Communities in Schools, is also able to help.

Communities in Schools of the Coastal Bend aims to help teens stay and succeed in school. They said every year, there is a huge need to help seniors who lack the 50 to 80 dollars to pay for a cap and gown.

Gloria Taylor, the executive director for Communities in Schools said, so far they've helped over 300 students in 13 different school districts, but the need is still around.

"Unfortunately sometimes the need exceeds what we have, and so some schools do their own donation drives, and so we hope and we give them all the support we can," she said,

Recently, previous high school graduates have donated their gently-used cap and gowns to seniors. That way, the student only has to pay for their tassel.
