Truck driver falls asleep at the wheel, loses full load of grain along I-37

The truck is rated to carry around 80,000 pounds.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The driver of an 18-wheeler lost a full load of grain Monday morning after falling asleep at the wheel and veering into a ditch along the I-37 feeder road near the Labonte Park area.

Department of Public Safety troopers said it was around 7 a.m. when the truck driver feel asleep at the wheel and veering off the roadway. Troopers said when he got into a ditch he was unable to correct so he tipped the truck over and spilled his load of grain.

Thankfully no one was hurt.

Troopers said the driver reported that he had got off work at 1 a.m. after loading the trailer but had to wake up at 5 a.m. to drive the truck. The driver said he normally takes that route but fell asleep.

The truck is rated to carry around 80,000 pounds. The truck was heading to Corn Products Inc.

No citation was given for the accident.
