CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As Work Zone Awareness Week comes to a close, TxDOT officials want to get the word out about the dangers of distracted driving while in construction zones.

Crews with TxDOT worked to recreate crash scenarios in Beeville on Tuesday to create a film showing how dangerous it can be for both workers and drivers.

According to TxDOT, in 2018, there were 161 deadly crashes reported around work zones.

TxDOT officials are encouraging drivers to put down the phone, slow down and pay attention.

"People realize that we're out here," maintenance supervisor Joe Hernandez said. "Trying to make a motorist aware. to slow down through the work zones, keep  your eyes open, be alert of all our warning signs ahead of time."

By law, drivers should slow down to 20 miles per hour in a work zone, or they could face a fine of $2,000.
