The Black Chamber of Commerce, HEB and the USO of South Texas will be partnering Friday to host an annual diaper drive right here at the Kiii-TV studios.
In 2016, Kiii-TV collected more than 15,000 diapers for active duty military families here and in Kingsville.
"I've been both on the receiving and the giving end of the diaper drive. We have just plussed up one this year, so we're on our third child, my wife, and I, and for the previous years we've donated and this year, due to time constraints," Petty Officer First Class Michael Clayton said. "The USO's a great place to come and pick up diapers and wipes and any other items for our child when we're traveling back and forth."
"USO's across the nation have always offered baby supplies, especially in our airport locations. It's something that as a military member who travels a lot, sometimes you get stuck in the airport overnight with a baby, and you only packed enough diaper supplies for maybe one day and then all of a sudden your travel is 48 hours, so the USO has been providing that service for a long time," said USO Executive Director Sarah Banta.
According to Banta, this is a giving community, and they hope to collect even more this year.
For active military like Clayton, with a wife and three children, he said the USO and local veterans give his family a good feeling.
"The veterans here in the area have been at most of the functions that I've been at more or less in strong numbers, so I'm not surprised that there's a family type feel here in the Coastal Bend," Clayton said.
The diaper drive will run from 5 a.m.-6:30 p.m.
