CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — It was a somber Monday at King High School as students returned to campus without one of their classmates.
18-year-old Je'Sani Smith went missing Thursday afternoon in the waters off Whitecap Beach. His body was recovered Sunday about three miles south of Bob Hall Pier.
On Monday, a crowd gathered outside of King High School during a planned vigil for Smith.
Classmates, friends and family surrounded the flag pole outside the school for the vigil, which was organized by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Smith, a senior at King High School, was a well known athlete who played football and basketball. He was set to graduate in just over a month.
According to police, Smith had been caught in a rip current near Whitecap Beach and never resurfaced. Multiple agencies searched for days, but his body was discovered Sunday by a fisherman.
