Voestalpine donates $10,000 to Coastal Bend Food Bank

The iron ore processing plant handed over a $10,000 check Friday to the Coastal Bend Food Bank's Portland chapter.

PORTLAND, Texas (Kiii News) — The City of Portland, which is still recovering from Hurricane Harvey, got some major help Friday thanks to a donation from the nearby Voestalpine plant.

The iron ore processing plant handed over a $10,000 check Friday to the Coastal Bend Food Bank's Portland chapter. It's actually located inside the Salvation Army building there.

The Salvation Army and Food Bank work together to distribute food to the people living in San Patricio County. The Food Bank said Friday's gift will make a big difference.

"The Food Bank is all volunteers. We have to go out and raise our own money to run this place and when something like this happens, it is awesome for us to keep the people who want to volunteer in the community, to keep them employed somehow," Food Bank volunteer Joe Garza said.

Money from Friday's donation will stay in San Patricio County to help those still rebuilding after Harvey.
