COVID-19 vaccine update, Coastal Bend COVID Task Force Q&A

On Monday, January 11, the Robstown fairgrounds will host a mass vaccine distribution where 1,000 residents can get the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine daily.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — 4,000 Moderna vaccines are set to hit the Coastal Bend next week as part of one of the biggest local vaccine efforts.

On Friday, health leaders were busy addressing the community and answered questions about the mass vaccine distribution.

On Monday, January 11 the fairgrounds in Robstown is set to host a mass vaccine distribution where 1,000 residents can get the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine daily.

This is not open to the general public. Only Phase 1-A and Phase 1-B vaccination groups are eligible.

Public Health Director Annette Rodriguez said it's important for the community to know if they qualify for the vaccine before getting in line and the person to ask is your primary care physician.

"You really need to talk to your doctor before you even come to our line. We don't have physicians there that are saying 'let's talk about your medical history, let me check your vital signs.' We're not doing any of that," said Rodriguez.

Rodriguez said to help speed the process and get the line moving once, make sure you know which arm you want the shot in. To help even more, she asks that residents where a loose top.

"If you're wanting your left arm vaccinated, you can be the driver or you can be sitting behind the driver," said added.

Rodriguez wants to remind the community, 4,000 is not a small number so the line will likely be long and wait times are expected.

"Here's the issue, so if you registered, you came in, let's say you there at 3 o'clock...well there's 2,000 cars in front of you so by the time we get to you, it could be after 8 p.m. at night. It's hard to see at this point so no, we wouldn't be able to vaccinate you until the next day and you would have your QR code and it's still good for the next day."

Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales said 4,000 vaccines is a lot, but it's not enough for everyone right now. The way to get more vaccines sent down to the Coastal Bend is to get more people vaccinated.

"We will have standing to ask for the next 4,000 to be sent to us rapidly," said the Judge.

Officials are urging to community to register for the vaccine as soon as possible on Sunday, January 10 starting at 5 p.m.

The health district asks that you not camp out on the fairgrounds leading up to the distribution as more vaccines will be on the way.
