Mayor Nelda Martinez declared June 9-19 as the annual Juneteenth Celebration in Corpus Christi Tuesday, with members of the Juneteenth Coalition in attendance.

The celebration marks the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in Texas in 1865. It is recognized by 42 states. This year, men and women in the military are being recognized.

"This year we are celebrating the achievements and accomplishments of African-Americans in the military, as well as our local protectors," said Hannah Carter, chair of the Juneteenth Coalition. "So we're excited about that and we have lots of programs planned that are open to the community, because we want you to join us in this celebration."
