It's National Catholic Schools Week, and local schools will have special activities all throughout.

Mayor Nelda Martinez went to Central Catholic Elementary, near City Hall, for a meet and greet with kids at the school on Monday. She also helped kick off the celebrations with a prayer, asking for the protection and safety of all children.

Educators at the school said the festivities help celebrate the life of Jesus Christ.

"We can talk about Jesus, and he is the reason for the school," said Sister Anne Brigid Schlegel, principal of Central Catholic Elementary. "Without him, we wouldn't have a school, and so we talk about him and get to know him as a person and as friend, and then we get to work on math, reading and science."

On the last day of the week, kids will be released from school at noon.
