Military Matters: Soaring into the future

3 News reporter Bill Churchwell gets a closer look at the future of naval flight which includes the next generation of fighter jets

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — It takes precision and skill to land on an aircraft carrier at sea.
Coming down the production line at Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth the brand new f-35's, a fighter jet that is about to change everything and what a better way to learn more about the next generation of fighter jets than by getting right in the cockpit.

Using this f-35 flight simulator is like taking flight without even leaving land and one of the main features is a touch screen on the front.

Development manager with Lockheed Martin, Tom Halley said "that is not your normal touch screen like you are poking on your phone, this is a laser touch screen, it has a laser across the front, if you are wearing your gloves, you can touch that screen still...not only do we have the best radar in the world but we also have in the leading edges, that can look for surface to air missiles, able to take that data "

Allowing pilots to seek out bad guys and get in and out of a mission without being locked on by a threat. each one of the aircraft will cost the navy a whopping 97 million dollars.

Being behind the controls, even if it's a simulation, it was a little intimidating. Still, given this incredible future tech, even Bill Churchwell was able to stick the landing.
