Holiday travel was out of control in the Houston-Beaumont area along I-10 Thursday, as a series of accidents that happened around 9 a.m.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said about 100 vehicles were involved in three multi-vehicle pileups within a mile and a half of each other. At least two people died as a result, after being hit from behind by an 18-wheeler.

A number of ambulances and rescue equipment units responded to the scene, and were transferring accident victims to be checked out at a command post. Authorities said anywhere from 80 to 120 people were injured.

Both directions of the highway were shut down for much of the day. The wrecks are all believed to be fog-related.
