The Corpus Christi Police Department's Explorer Academy kicked off Thursday night. It's a program aimed at giving teenagers a head start on a career in law enforcement.

"Hopefully when I'm older, I want to join the police department," Police Explorer Andrew Vera said. "You know, and help everybody out, and do what I can to kick everything off the streets."

"Really what we are trying to instill is leadership in each and every one of these young men and women," CCPD Commander Heidi Frese said.

Every Thursday night and Saturday until graduation in June, 30 students between the ages of 14 and 20 will be taking part in different classes at Del Mar College's West Campus, from criminal law to crisis intervention.
