Relay for Life celebration honors cancer survivors

The dinner included a casino-like atmosphere where survivors and fighters got to play games, win prizes and enjoy each other's company.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —  The 2019 Relay for Life survivors dinner was held at King Ranch Museum to honor those who have either beat or are still fighting their battle with cancer.

On Thursday night 65 cancer survivors and fighters celebrate the theme of Betting on a Cure.

The dinner included a casino-like atmosphere where survivors and fighters got to play games, win prizes and enjoy each other's company.

For the past 11 years, survivor 61-year-old Deanna Guerra has been coming to the banquet.

In 2008 Guerra was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, and after six years of intense treatment she always kept her faith and became cancer free.

"I was going through a divorce, and I was like my world, everything came tumbling down, I had to stop work because I removed my right breast. So no job, no home," Guerra said. "God is good, I fought cancer, and I beat it."

Guerra hopes to continue being an inspiration to others still battling.

Funds raised from Relay for Life will not only go towards research for a cure but helping those who are battling the disease with travel and medical expenses.

Relay for Life will take place from 6 p.m. until midnight Friday, April 12 at Texas A&M Univerisity- Kingsville.
