CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A church in central Corpus Christi is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year.

But it had humble beginnings.

“This property all of this area was just an open field,” C.E. Richardson, pastor of Calvary said.
Richardson has been the pastor at Calvary for 30 years, and while that seems like a long time some members have him beat.

“I was born and raised in this church, so I’ve been here for 64 years,” church member, KKY Hill said.

Mr. And Mrs. Hill said they've both had many fond memories in the church.
For Mrs. Hill it was helping open up the church as a little girl and for Mr. Hill the church was a place to receive support as well as worship.

“I started here in 1986 and when I started here I was a single parent,” church member, Willie T. Hill said.

The healing Calvary does goes beyond the sanctuary walls.
They are out enriching the community as well.

“Calvary is known as an institution it is more than a church it's and institution,” Richardson said.

And Dorothy Wilson can second that.

“I joined church here 49 years ago,” church member, Wilson said.

And she doesn't plan on leaving anytime soon.

“It was like a beacon to me,” she said. “I love the spot. I like two blocks from the church.”

Many members of the church can share their love for it at the 80th anniversary homecoming celebration.

“Everybody gets to see everybody, renew acquaintances and just celebrate Jesus for the 80 years,” Richardson said.

The celebration will take place at the church on August 4th starting at 11 a.m.
