A spokesperson for Christus Spohn Hospitals here in Corpus Christi is criticizing reports that have surfaced in other local media outlets. These reports suggest that Spohn is considering demolishing the local trauma center, Christus Spohn Memorial, and replacing it with a smaller outpatient clinic. The reports also say the plan includes moving the existing trauma facilities at Memorial to Spohn Hospital Shoreline. The spokesperson says the reports are misleading, and that Spohn would actually be making a major investment in the community to create a state of the art outpatient facility for the treatment of patients with diabetes and heart disease, and that any change of that magnitude would first have to get the approval of the Nueces County Hospital District Board. Memorial Hospital on the city's westside, despite its aging facilities, remains the county's primary trauma center. It first opened in 1944.
