It was a day of firsts as the Schafer family decided to stay at home and have the first baby of the new year.

The Schafer's live on Texas Avenue, and decided to have a natural birth baby. The nine-pound baby girl was born at 12:25 a.m. inside of the family home, as they chose to have their second child in the comfort of familiar surroundings.

"Particularly for us, in the hospital we found that we had to defend our stance and desires, personal desires, a little bit more," Sharon Schafer said. "And we really wanted a custom birth. Our birth. A Schafer birth."

"When you tell someone, people start thinking you're so brave," Joshua Schafer said. "Take the time to find out what a home birth is, and see if it's for you or not."

Sharon and Joshua have not yet decided on a name for their little girl, because they were actually expecting a boy. The surprise, delivered by their midwife, now has them scrambling to find just the right name for their New Year's baby.

At last report, both the mother and daughter are doing fine.
