CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Christmas in July was a big hit for the Hooks last night. Tonight, no Santa in the house, but a big league player is back at Whataburger Field.
Astros super utility man Aledmys Diaz played his first game as a Corpus Christi hook last night. Tonight, he was looking to find a groove at the plate after going 0-for-3 against the Springfield Cardinals.
Diaz, typically a middle infielder, got some time at 1st base last night. Now, he has played a few games at first this season with the Astros, but, with Tyler White being designated for an assignment on Friday there is a need for someone to backup Yuli Gurriel. Diaz doesn't see his work at first as a transition to focusing on the position. He see's it more as building on his versatility to play all around the diamond.
Diaz said he's starting to feel near 100 percent. The biggest thing for him now is being comfortable at the plate and playing back-to-back days.
