Hooks clinch series victory, win third straight

Corpus Christi got out to a seven run lead and then had to hold off a Frisco rally.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Hooks scored seven times over the first three innings and withstood a late Frisco surge, beating the RoughRiders, 8-6, Tuesday night at Whataburger Field.

Corpus Christi, 5-1 at Whataburger Field, have won three in a row.

The Hooks (6-7) jumped on Frisco lefty Brock Burke in the first. Ronnie Dawson was plunked by the first pitch of the frame. Stephen Wrenn followed with a walk. Dawson advanced to third thanks to a stolen base and a wild pitch, and then scored on a Josh Rojas chopper to first base. J.J. Matijevic later delivered a two-out, two-run double down the right-field line.

With one away in the second, Anibal Sierra coaxed a walk and came around to score on back-to-back singles by Ronnie Dawson and Stephen Wrenn.

Corpus Christi knocked Burke (0-2) out of the game in the third thanks to a three-run outburst. Lorenzo Quintana plated a pair with a double to right-center.

Hooks starter Carson LaRue excelled on the hill, scattering three hits and one walk over four-plus innings. LaRue, who struck out six, boasts a 2.70 ERA through his first three assignments.

Frisco erupted in the sixth, scoring five times on four walks and three hits while sending 10 men to bat against Brett Adcock and Colin McKee. Juremi Profar's two-run double ended Adcock's night. Brendon Davis plated two with a double, making it a 7-5 contest.

Granden Goetzman provided insurance in the eighth with a lead-off home run onto the left-field berm. Both of Goetzman's blasts have come off Frisco right-hander Wei-Chieh Huang.

McKee (2-1) posted a 1-2-3 seventh and stranded a pair in the eighth.

Christian Lopes, who worked a lead-off walk in the ninth, notched the sixth Frisco run thanks to Tony Sanchez's RBI single.

Lefty Kit Scheetz, who earned the win Monday night, recorded the final three outs while stranding the tying runs on base for his first save of the season.

The Hooks shoot for the series sweep Wednesday night with Brandon Bailey on the hill. Frisco counters with Jonathan Hernandez. First pitch 6:15.
