CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — We had three finalists this week, all from girls basketball teams that are in the playoffs, but, in the end it was Veterans Memorial's Sammi Perez who won our 3News Athlete of the Week voting.

Sammi, a junior for the Lady Eagles, has played a huge role in the teams success this season. As a guard, she plays a prototypical style, being able to shoot the three-ball as well as dish out the assists. One of her best games this season came at the right time, Perez scored 17 points in the Lady Eagles Bi-District round playoff win over Alice. Vets is currently ranked 12th in class 5A in the state of Texas, so, obviously a great team. But, the team doesn't care about the rankings, they care about the playoffs and that's right where they are right now looking to get to State for the first time in program history. But first, this week a matchup with Carroll a team Vets has lost to in dramatic fashion earlier this season. So, Perez's focus is on this week's game and she had  a few thank you's to say.

Sammi and the Lady Eagles will be looking for a trip to the Regional Tournament on Tuesday night with a tip-off at 6 PM on Tuesday night against Carroll at King high school.
