EDINBURG, TX (UTPA Broncs) - The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team beat the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas 74-56 in an exhibition game on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Sophomore Shaquille Hines scored a team-high 18 points, more than he scored in any game last season, on 6-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc to go with eight rebounds. Graduate student Javorn Farrell scored 11 points while senior Justin Leathers scored 10 points with eight rebounds.
Rashad Basey led the Javelinas with a game-high 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 4-of-4 from behind the arc. Ronald Scott scored 11 points with six rebounds. Robert Powell had a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench.
The Broncs jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, but the Javelinas used an 8-0 run spanning three minutes to take the lead. The Javelinas led 18-17 with 8:06 left in the first half, but Hines hit a layup and two free throws to spark a 25-7 run spanning the next 11:09 to take a 42-25 lead on a pair of Hurley Johnson free throws.
The Javelinas climbed to within 10 on a Scott jumper with 10:33 remaining, but the Broncs responded with an 8-0 run, started by an Alex Majewski jumper and capped by the first of two acrobatic Farrell dunks to make it 61-43.
The Broncs took their largest lead of the game at 70-46 on a Leathers dunk that punctuated a 7-0 run with 4:34 to go.
The Broncs open the regular season on Friday when they host Sam Houston State at the UTPA Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. It's part of a single-admission doubleheader, as the women's basketball team hosts Schreiner at 5. Doors open at 4.
