KINGSVILLE (Javelinas Sports Information) - Incarnate Word traveled to Texas A&M-Kingsville and came back from a pair of three-run deficits to sweep a doubleheader, 7-6 and 7-4, at Nolan Ryan Field on Friday night in Lone Star Conference action.

In the first game, the Javelinas (29-14, 16-10) scored five times in the first three innings and had a chance to score more, but the Cardinals (22-17, 16-9) were able to escape the situation. The Hoggies jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the first three innings. Jake Mendiola (Kingsville/Richland Northeast HS) had a two-run single in the first inning and drove in another run in the second inning.

The Cardinals came back to claim the lead after scoring twice in the fourth and fifth innings. Adam Pena's fifth inning single gave the Cards their first lead of the game at 6-5.

The Javelinas tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Cards responded in the sixth with their third unearned run of the game. Ethan Lutz made the one-run lead stand up as he closed out the game with two perfect innings to pick up the save. Justin Kanas was credited with the win after pitching 2.0 innings of relief without allowing an earned run.

Jaden Dillon (Bridge City/Bridge City HS) took his first loss of the year for the Javelinas after allowing 10 hits, four earned runs and one walk while striking out five in 5.1 innings. Mendiola and Cameron Dullnig (San Antonio/Clark HS) each had two hits for the team.

In the second game, Adam Aspaas (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills HS) and Keith Vasquez locked up in a pitcher's duel. The Cards scored a run in the top of the first and the Javs tied it up with a solo home run by Trent Wagner (Victoria/Memorial HS) in the bottom of the second.

In the sixth inning, the Javelinas broke through. Dustin Aguilar (San Antonio/Roosevelt HS) led off the inning with a single and scored on Taylor Taska's (Kingwood/Kingwood HS) double. Taska came around to score on a double by Dullnig who extended his hitting streak to 20 games. Wagner drove in Dullnig with a single to make it a 4-1 game.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Cardinals regained control of the game. With two outs and two runs already in, Thomas Rinn tied the game with a triple and then scored the go ahead run on a single by Pena. Incarnate Word tacked on a run in both the eighth and ninth innings.

The Javelinas did not threaten to score over the final three innings. Zach Anderson picked up the win with 0.2 innings of scoreless relief and Lutz notched his second save of the day by pitching 2.0 scoreless innings to close out the game.

The Javelinas are now in third place in the conference standings, 1.5 games behind Angelo State and a half game behind Incarnate Word.

The Cardinals recorded a triple play in the bottom of the first inning of the second game. With runners on first and second, Taska hit a hard line drive to shortstop Lucas Miller who tossed the ball to Pena at second who tagged the bag and the runner on the move from first base.

The Javs and Cardinals conclude their series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi.
