Islanders men get big win at SFA

A&M-CC got out to a big lead and held on for a must-win against the Lumberjacks.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Story Headlines

- The Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi men's basketball team defeated Stephen F. Austin, 65-55, on Wednesday evening at the William R. Johnson Coliseum in Nacogdoches, Texas.

- The Islanders moved to 11-15 overall and 6-7 in Southland Conference play with the victory while the 'Jacks fall to 13-12 overall and 6-7 in league action.

- Kareem South scored a career-high 29 points on 12-of-22 shooting with five three pointers. He also grabbed 12 rebounds for his first career double-double.

Key Islander Statistics

- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi led 27-24 at the break and outscored SFA, 38-31, in the second half.

- The Islanders held a 41-32 edge in rebounds and finished with 15 assists, seven steals and 30 points in the paint.

- A&M-Corpus Christi led for 38:39 of the game while the 'Jacks did not lead at any point during the contest.

- South hit 5-of-10 three point attempts and grabbed three offensive rebounds.

- Emmanuel Toney scored 12 points with seven rebounds, six assists and two steals in 38 minutes of action. He hit a pair of three pointers finishing 5-of-11 from the field.

- Elijah Schmidt scored eight points with six rebounds, three coming on the offensive glass. He had one block and one steal defensively.

- Jashawn Talton scored six points with seven rebounds and three assists. He also had a blocked shot.

- Tre Gray hit a pair of three pointers to finish with six points in 16 minutes of work. He had an assist and a steal.

- Tony Lewis had four rebounds and hit a pair of free throws to go along with a steal.

Hot Start

- The Islanders got a boost by starting the game on a 17-0 run. SFA didn't score until the 13:23 mark of the first half, going 0-for-8 from the field during the stretch. South paced the Islander attack with 11 points, making his first three three-point attempts of the evening.

Strong Finish

- With 8:15 to go in the second half, SFA had cut the Islander lead to just two, 46-44. But South and Toney hit back-to-back buckets for A&M-Corpus Christi to push the lead back out to six, 50-44. South would add another three pointer, his fifth of the ball game with 5:25 to play to complete a quick 8-0 run for the Islanders. The 'Jacks would never get closer than eight points for the remainder of the game.
