I-35 is the deadliest road in Austin, new study reveals

The study from MoneyGeek found that I-20 is the deadliest road in the state. It also named I-35 one of the deadliest five-mile stretches of road in Texas.

AUSTIN, Texas — Interstate 35 is the most deadly road in Austin, and Interstate 20 is the deadliest in Texas, according to a new study.

MoneyGeek analyzed over 10,000 fatal crashes from 2017-2019 in Texas based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Two-hundred-sixty-two of those were in Austin, resulting in 273 deaths. Thirty-three of the fatal accidents in Austin were on I-35.

The study also found that drivers and their passengers are more likely to die in a drunken driving-related accident than on the deadliest road in the state. Twenty-five percent of the fatal accidents analyzed were drunk driving-related. Only 2% of fatal accidents were on I-20.

A total of 214 crashes recorded in the three-year study period took place on I-20, which stretches across over 600 miles of Texas from east to west.

In Austin, 19% of the fatal crashes were drunken driving-related. Just under 13% of fatal accidents in Austin happened on I-35.

I-35 was also named one of the deadliest five-mile stretches of road in Texas, according to the study. Others included were the Stemmons Freeway in Dallas, Tomball Parkway in Houston, and Texas 183 through Irving, Fort Worth and Euless.
