The Port Aransas ferry ceased operations temporarily starting at 10 a.m. Thursday to allow workers to continue a dredging project by the Port of Corpus Christi and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The aim of the dredging project is to remove sand that was deposited into the ship channel during Hurricane Harvey creating shoaling, or sections of shallow water, in certain areas along the channel.

During the temporary closure Thursday, Orion Marine Group connected sections of dredge discharge pipe above water, blocking the ferry landings on Harbor Island until the pipe was submerged.

They finished submerging the pipe in about an hour and ferry operations resumed at 11:07 a.m.
