In January 2018, TxDOT initiated construction of improvements to enhance safety and increase mobility along SH 358 (South Padre Island Drive) in Corpus Christi, Texas (Nueces County). The four-year project consists of multiple phases and is located along SH 358 from just north of Leopard Street to just east of Flour Bluff Drive.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Officials from TxDOT say to make up for work delayed by wet weather earlier in the week, a contractor for the State Highway 358 (South Padre Island Drive) ramp reversal project will close the SH 358 eastbound-to-westbound turnaround at Everhart Road from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday, June 6.

Drivers may instead make a left turn at Everhart, TxDOT says.

These exit ramp closures are also scheduled next week for retaining wall work:

  • Monday, June 8, through Friday, June 12, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily: The eastbound SH 358 exit ramp to Kostoryz Road will be closed. Drivers wishing to access Kostoryz or Carroll Lane may take the next exit to Weber Road and use the turnaround and westbound SH 358 frontage road to travel back to either street.
  • Wednesday, June 10, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.: The eastbound SH 358 exit ramp to Weber will be closed. Drivers wishing to access Weber may take the Kostoryz exit and continue on the frontage road.

Other closures planned for next week include:

SH 358 Frontage Road Closures

  • Daytime and nighttime single-lane closures will continue on the westbound frontage road east and west of the Kostoryz intersection for sign column installation. Driveway access to all businesses and properties will remain open at all times.
  • Daytime and nighttime single-lane closures will continue on the eastbound frontage road at various locations between Kostoryz Road and Airline Road. Driveway access to all businesses and properties will remain open at all times.

SH 358 Turnaround Closures

  • Until further notice: The SH 358 eastbound-to-westbound and westbound-to-eastbound frontage road turnarounds at Everhart Road will be closed intermittently for overpass widening work. Drivers on the eastbound and westbound frontage roads may make a left turn at Everhart.

Until further notice: Various SH 358 eastbound-to-westbound and westbound-to-eastbound frontage road turnarounds at Kostoryz, Carroll, and Weber will be closed for overpass widening work. Drivers may instead make left turns at these intersections which will remain open.

Officials from TxDOT say all work is weather permitting and want to remind drivers that lane closures are subject to change without notice.

According to officials from TxDOT, in January 2018, TxDOT initiated the construction of improvements to enhance safety and increase mobility along SH 358 (South Padre Island Drive).

The four-year project consists of multiple phases and is located along SH 358 from just north of Leopard Street to just east of Flour Bluff Drive.

This 15-mile project includes the following improvements to address safety and mobility:

  • Reconstruct several eastbound entrance and exit ramps between Ayers Street and Nile Drive, including:
    • “Reversing ramps” between Weber Road and South Staples Street. This involves converting existing entrance ramps into exit ramps and vice-versa, similar in design to the previously “reversed” westbound ramps between Weber Road and Airline Road.
    • Relocating the exit ramps serving Kostoryz Road/Carroll Lane and Weber Road.
    • These ramp reversals and relocations will increase safety and mobility by providing additional distance for exiting vehicles and frontage road traffic to merge and queue while approaching signalized intersections.
  • Widen and construct new auxiliary, or "merge," lanes on the eastbound mainlanes and frontage road between Ayers Street and Nile Drive to allow drivers entering and exiting the highway to safely merge with other traffic.
  • Improve lighting and reconstruct the existing mainlane median barrier between Ayers Street and Nile Drive to enhance safety.
  • Construct new sidewalks between Ayers Street and Nile Drive to improve safety and access for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Improve traffic signal timing and connectivity along the eastbound frontage road to increase mobility.
  • Improve Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) along the entire corridor to provide drivers and emergency responders with accurate, up-to-the-minute traffic information.
