Corpus Christi mayor says emergency operations center now closed

'We’re just really glad that this was not an event as grand as what could have been,' Mayor Paulette Guajardo said.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Some of the potential impacts that Corpus Christi expected from Tropical Storm Nicholas appear to be going down as it moves northeast.

Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo said Monday evening they have officially closed the emergency operations center, but they still plan to monitor weather conditions in case anything changes.

"We're very grateful that the storm did not affect us directly," Guajardo said. "However, it’s a good reminder of the things we need to do of keeping in constant contact with our residents and being proactive," she said.

One of the precautionary actions included a sandbag distribution event that was held on Sunday.

"We gave away like 1,600 of them I think yesterday," she said.

The state was also prepared to step in and help if needed.

"I can also tell you Gov. Greg Abbott did call me last night, late yesterday afternoon, just to remind us that he is here for the City of Corpus Christi and he was ready with state resources should we need them," she added.

"We’re just really glad that this was not an event as grand as what could have been," she said.

Around 5 p.m., the forecast track showed the storm would make landfall in a few hours, just off the southeast of Palacios.
