Charges dropped for driver in fatal accident

Dacota Deaver was arrested in January, three months after the incident, when an arrest warrant was issued.

Corpus Christi (KIII News) — All charges have been dropped Wednesday afternoon for the man accused of causing the death of a woman who was pushing her broken down vehicle.

The Attorney Generals Office asked the court to drop manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide charges against 22-year old Dacota Deaver stating they did not have the necessary evidence to prove Deaver had been on the phone at the time of the accident.

The accident happened in October of 2017. Police at the time said 44-year old Cecilia Stanford was pushing her car after it broke down in Calallen and an SUV drove by Deaver slammed into her from behind.

After Wednesday's hearing, Stanford's family is appalled by the state's decision.

"I'm shocked," Stanford's sister Kara Sands said. "I think the state sent a message today that its ok to kill someone with your car."

According to Sands, the family will continue searching for justice and will never forget her.
