Social media's impact on Fiesta de la Flor 2018

Because social media is now "the thing," Fiesta de la Flor is evolving.

Corpus Christi (KIII news) — Social media is where it's at these days -- that's what organizers of the fourth annual Fiesta de la Flor say.

If you wonder just how popular the festival is, or whether it matters to the rest of the world, just take one look at the numbers and it should give you an idea.

"Our generation of Hispanics and Millenials are really seeing how much they love Selena because of how they're part of that generation," said Emily Zertuche, content and social media strategist for Corpus Christi's Convention & Visitor's Bureau.

Zertuche is the point person at the CVB when it comes to social media, and when it comes to FDLF, short for Fiesta de la Flor, she knows the numbers and what they mean.

"It's just transitioning into something so much bigger, and this year we've seen a huge shift in the demographics for who's coming," Zertuche said. "We're beginning to see the younger crowds come in. Ages 24-35 is our widest demographic on social media and it's starting to play into the festival as well."

The social media reach on the brand Fiesta de la Flor on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram can mean the difference between a big event and a massive event.

"The reason we're focusing so heavily on social media is because we have seen last year a total of 10.7 million impressions in the week of the 2017 Fiesta de la Flor festival, and because of that intense impact we are heavily focusing a lot of our marketing strategy through social media," Zertuche said.

Because social media is now "the thing," Fiesta de la Flor is evolving.

"We're going to have many selfie social media stations, so throughout the entire festival grounds there will be opportunities for Selena fans to engage on our Selena selfie stations," Zertuche said. "There will also be our signature FDLF letters that have been really popular within the past two years, and we're also going to have a social media wall."
