90-day burn ban in affect in Jim Wells County

County commissioners said drought conditions are present in the area and more above normal temperatures are expected.

JIM WELLS COUNTY, Texas — Jim Wells County Commissioners approved Monday a 90-day burn ban in the county due to drought conditions in the area.

According to the Jim Wells County Office of Emergency Management, the Texas A&M Forest Service Predictive Services Department reported to county commissioners that drought conditions are present and that much of the grass in the area from spring rains are dying at a rapid rate. They also report that long term forecasts predict "above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall."

Upon the recommendation of the Jim Wells County Office of Emergency ... Management, the Commissioners Court this morning approved a 90-day county BURN BAN effective immediately. Upon consultation with the Texas A&M Forest Service Predictive Services department, it was determined that drought conditions are present throughout Jim Wells County and that much of the grasses (fuels) that are present from spring rains are drying out at a rapid rate.

The burn ban will remain in effect for the next 90 days. 3News will keep you updated.
