Testimony begins in trial of former judge Guy Williams

During cross-examination, the defense asked Stewart why he opened the door and attempted to get out while still at a red light.

Testimony got underway Tuesday in the trial of former District Judge Guy Williams, a case that started with allegations of road rage and lead to charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

"The guy in the white car was saying, 'What are you gonna do about it?' and some other things that I could not exactly make out, but it definitely sounded like egging on to me," witness Sarah Stewart said.

Stewart was the passenger in a car being driven by her husband Brook, who alleges that Williams threatened them with a weapon during a road rage incident. Stewart said Williams screamed profanities during their brief encounter, which happened at a stop light at Airline and SPID.

Brook Stewart was behind the wheel of the car and told jurors the incident unfolded after Williams allegedly cut them off as approached the stop light.

"I did open my door and I closed it right away. I did not want to go over there and didn't want anything to happen. I did not want to have a physical confrontation with anybody, so I did open the door, not even wide enough to get my foot out," Brook said. "Closed it right away. Just real quick. Open. Close."

During cross-examination, the defense asked Stewart why he opened the door and attempted to get out while still at a red light.

In November, Williams was indicted in the case and was removed from the bench of the 148th District Court. If found guilty of the two second-degree aggravated assault charges, he could face up to 20 years in prison, but could also get probation.

The trial continues Wednesday.
