CCISD hosts first ever free prom attire event

Caring Corner was stocked with dresses, tuxedos, ties, jewelry, shoes, and so much more for students searching for the perfect outfit for prom.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Several students picked out tuxedos and dresses at Corpus Christi ISD’s Caring Corner held its very first free prom attire event Saturday.

Caring Corner was stocked with dresses, tuxedos, ties, jewelry, shoes, and so much more for students searching for the perfect outfit for prom.

"All of us here at CCISD believe that every student should have the prom of their dreams, and so we really do hope that we can make some of those dreams happen right now," said Dr. Maria Lyescas, the coordinator for mental health services.

At the beginning of the school year, Young's Bridal donated 100 dresses to CCISD's Caring Corner. That's when Lyescas said the district began to think about just how much more they could do to serve more students.

"So, I sent emails out. I made phone calls 'Like this is what we're doing. We're having this huge prom event on April 6. This is what we need,' and everyone answered the call," Lyescas said. "Every week I had phone calls 'Maria, where do we drop this off? I have some dresses for you. I have some shoes."

Over 600 prom dress were collected and 300 of those dresses came from the Coastal Bend Fairy God Mothers. Another donor purchased tuxedo rentals for 70 students.

District social worker, Lynda Ramirez believes after the donations received, that this event could be something the district holds annually.

"Really, we want to make sure that everybody gets to experience prom in fine fashion,” Ramirez said.

Lyescas said the event made an impact in the people who attended.

"I think somebody even got teary because students who feel like they want to look their best and maybe don't have the means to do so, these dresses are exceptional, the ties, shoes the accessories. Walking out with everything that you need to experience prom has been fun to watch," Lyescas said.
