PORTLAND, Texas — More than one hundred athletes flocked to the Portland Aquatic Center to swim, bike and run in the annual Boo Bash Triathlon on Saturday morning.

Sheri Gagliano, Recreation Program Mngr. with the City of Portland said that everyone from entry-level to elite competitors came from all over the state to battle it out across three competition levels.

  • Sprint Tri:  400-yard Swim, 14-mile Bike, and 5K Run
  • Newbie Tri:  200-yard Swim, 6-mile Bike, and 1 mile Run
  • Sprint Tri Relay:  400-yard Swim, 12-mile Bike, and 5K Run

“We have veterans that actually travel the world doing these and train people and then we have the new people. That's why we have 'newbie,' but they come from all over the state and additionally we have some that come from out of state. Some of them travel pretty far to compete in this one,” said Gagliano.

The Newbie level was specially designed for those dipping their toes into the triathlon waters for the first time.

Sprint Tri was the toughest competition level where athletes had to complete a 400-yard swim, 14-mile bike ride and a 5k-mile run with the fastest time.

Race officials said they congratulated Michaela Garcia & Nicolas Feraci, winners of the Sprint Tri competition, and Rafael Torneros and Karen Lanasa, who won the Newbie Tri.

All winners received medals, and according to the City of Portland, lifelong bragging rights.
