Multi-million-dollar aquatics center named after fallen soldier to have grand opening at JBSA-Lackland Tuesday

It will be named after a pararescueman who died while serving in Afghanistan.

SAN ANTONIO — A brand new multi-million dollar aquatics center that is named for a fallen soldier will celebrate their grand opening at JBSA-Lackland on Tuesday.

It will be named after Master Sergeant Michael Maltz, a pararescueman who died while serving in Afghanistan. Maltz was from New York and was killed during a rescue mission in 2003.

His name will be honored during the grand opening ceremony of the new facility, to be called the Maltz Special Warfare Aquatic Training Center.

The $60 million dollar facility will consists of two olympic-sized swimming pools deep enough to meet the training needs for the U.S. Air Force.

The 76,000 square foot facility will also have human performance spaces, including a medical exam room and therapy bay.

According to military officials, it will meet the training needs for those who make up the Air Force’s offensive ground force.

Maltz’ many years of service include time spent at JBSA-Lackland. That’s where he was a former pararescue instructor, helping candidates reach their goals.

That grand opening is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday morning.
