Investigation underway after fire does damage to house undergoing renovation

Battalion chief David Saenz told 3News that CCFD was trying to determine if arson was the cause of the fire.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A house fire down the street from Spohn Shoreline drew out a small army of CCFD firefighters before causing severe damage before 9:30 a.m. Friday.

The fire happened at a home on Second Street near Craig Street.

The first truck on the scene called for backup after seeing thick black smoke pouring from the two-story structure.

Two truck companies and three engines, a rescue and a hazmat unit, as well as an ambulance were all on scene.

Battalion chief David Saenz told 3News that the fire had been burning for a while. According to Saenz, when rescue teams rushed in to the second floor to search for potential victims, they noticed holes had burned through to the first floor.

"We have an investigator coming to determine the cause as of now." Was there power to the building and if there wasn't it has to be arson?

When asked if he thought the cause might be arson, Saenz said they would know more after an investigation.

"Yeah, we're trying to figure that out right now. We went ahead and shutoff the power and gas and there was no gas, but we're trying to determine the cause now."

Despite the flames being put down quickly, the fire caused severe damage to the home.

There were not any victims as the house was under renovation.

No firefighters were injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
