CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A gathering was held at Solomon Coles High School Monday morning to kick off this year's Juneteenth Celebration.
Juneteenth is celebrated for 10 days and highlights all African-Americans' success and accomplishments from the time they were free from slavery up until the present day. This is the 15th year the school has held the celebration and they said they always encourage the community to get involved.
"When we start learning about each other we find that what I do is not much different from what you do, and with that commonality, it can really bring us together, and knowing what a person has experienced or not experienced can really help you," Hannah Carter said.
There will be many Juneteenth activities for people to get involved with throughout the week.
