Local firefighter reflects experience confronting panhandle fire

Cpt. Jeff Durrwachter told 3News the devastation was unbelievable.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A group of Coastal Bend firefighters who responded to the Smokehouse Creek fire in the panhandle are back home.

They were part of the emergency medical task force assisting in EMT and rescue efforts.

Cpt. Jeff Durrwachter told 3News the devastation was unbelievable.

"You can't imagine how much devastation that wrought on that area and in those communities. And we were, after we got up there, assigned to the Windy Duece Fire, which was only 150,000 acres, still massive beyond belief. People have lost their homes...it was devastation on a scale I've never seen."

At last check, the Smokehouse Creek fire was about 89 percent contained.
