Man killed in pedestrian accident on Crosstown Expressway identified

According to police, a group of pedestrians were crossing the freeway when one of them was hit.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A man was killed Thursday evening after he tried to cross the Crosstown Expressway near Agnes and was hit by a van.

According to police, two men were walking across the crosstown expressway when they made it to the middle concrete barrier. The men tried to cross all the way across the highway when they noticed the traffic was too heavy and turned around and a van hit one of the men.

The driver of the van stayed on the scene to help. Police said the driver would not face charges.

On Friday, the male victim was identified by the Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office as 30-year-old Charles Woodard.

Police stress that pedestrian accidents can easily be avoided.

"It's unbelievable, we've had a lot of these types of accidents, these pedestrian accidents all of last year. It's just. Please use the crosswalk. Be safe. We've had way too many of these accidents," Capt. Anthony Sanders said.

According to investigators, the second man who tried to cross that freeway took off before police got to the scene.
